Malvani Chicken | Spicy Chicken Curry

Malvani cuisine is basically Indian and originates from the konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa and some northern parts of West Karnataka.  Malvan is a town in the Sindhudurg district on the west coast of Maharashtra. Being a coastal area in Konkan, it has its own distinct way of cooking food. Malvani cuisine uses coconut liberally in various forms such as grated, dry grated, fried, coconut paste and coconut milk. I have taken this recipe from a cooking show by Aditya Pal Singh on Ndtv.

Preparation Time: 1 hour
Serves : 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg Chicken ( cut into medium or small pieces)
For the gravy
  • 3 Onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 4 to 5 tbsp of oil for cooking
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
For Malvani masala ( Dry roast and grind )
  • 6-7 dry red chilies
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • 6 - 7 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 big size cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 nutmeg grated
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
For Coconut paste ( Grind into smooth paste)
  • 1 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 5-6 cloves of garlic
  • 3 green chilies
  • 1 tbsp ginger chopped
Method:

  1. Heat oil in a sauce pan and add chopped onion. Fry them till light golden and then add coconut paste. Roast the coconut paste on low heat for 5 to 8 minutes.
  2. Add 3 to 4 tsp of ground Malvani masala along with red chilly powder and turmeric powder.
  3. Cook for 2 minutes and then add chicken pieces and cook on high flame for 2 minutes until juices are sealed and combined well with all the masala. Add salt and enough of water for chicken to cook. Place the lid on and cook on medium to low flame till chicken is well cooked.
  4. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
