Chana Dal Masala



Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chana dal 
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 medium tomato chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped
  • 2 small green chili chopped
  • 1 tsp whole cumin
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp kasoori methi (dry fenugreek leaves)
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 tbsp oil

Method:

1) Wash 1 cup chana dal and soak for 30 minutes. Boil in enough water and salt and set aside. Do not use pressure cooker.

2) Heat 4 tbsp oil in a pan and add 1 tsp whole cumin. When it crackles add 4 cloves of finely chopped garlic (fry till aromatic). Then add 1 cup chopped onion along with 2 green chilies chopped and fry till light golden. 







3) Add 1 chopped tomato and fry till soft. And the add 1 tbsp red chili powder, 1 tbsp coriander powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1/4 tsp garam masala powder and some salt.




4) Fry the masala on low flame for 5 to 7 minutes. Add few drops of water in case it sticks to the pan. The raw smell should disappear. Now add 2 tbsp kasoori methi and boiled chana dal along with the liquid. Place the lid and cook on low flame for 10 minutes. Add 1 tbsp of ghee on top and serve hot. You can add coriander leaves as garnish.





5) To be served hot with roti or naan.
