Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

Philly Cheese steak sandwich also known as Philadelphia Cheese steak sandwich, as the name says it all that it originates from Philadelphia. But now this sandwich is popular throughout the world, due to its simplicity and amazing taste. Nothing fancy about this one. What we need to do is just slice up a cooked steak and combine it with some melted cheese and veggies to go with it. I have not seen any variation or any different recipe for this. In my recipe I have not used any steak. What I have done is simply chopped up some boneless veal into thin slices and cooked them with salt, pepper and some soy sauce. This recipe also calls for a cheese called Provolone cheese, I was not able to find it so I decided to substitute it Monterey Jack Cheese or another substitute could be -  mixture of mozzarella and cheddar cheese and that worked perfectly fine with it. You can also make this sandwich using chicken instead of meat.

Preparation time: 1 hour or less
Serves 2

Ingredients

For Meat Filling (cook together)

  • 500 gms of boneless Beef/veal/chicken
  • 1 tsp Black pepper powder
  • 1 tbsp Soy sauce
  • Salt to taste.
  • Oil for cooking

For sandwich

  • 1 loaf Italian bread or 2 Sub Rolls
  • Cooked meat filling
  • 1 large white onion thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 4 to 5 sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 2 slices of Provolone cheese / Half cup mixture of grated mozzarella & cheddar cheese / grated Monterey Jack cheese
  • Few slices of pickled jalapeno pepper / green chilies chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a pan and stir fry onion, green bell pepper and mushrooms on high heat for 1 minute till they are caramelized yet crispy.
  2. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C.
  3. Take a Sub Roll and slit into half. Place the meat mixture on one half of the bread and layer it with veggies, jalapenos and finally with grated cheese. And place it in the hot oven till the cheese slightly melts. Remove from oven.
  4. Place the other half of the bread on top and serve hot.
