It is truly heartbreaking to see those bananas getting shunned just because they have changed color and have got an over ripe appearance. Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins can be a new way of giving the ripe bananas a makeover and not only making them being accepted but loved by all. 

And let me tell you one more after effect of these muffins, that since I have started making them, no one in my house is ready to eat bananas anymore. As if they are meant only for this. This is what my daughter has in mind. 

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins is a very easy and no fuss recipe. All the ingredients get mixed in one bowl. But it is better to mix the dry ingredients separately before adding the wet ingredients. And you also do not need any mixing appliances for this, as everything can be mixed with hand. Another good way of using ripe bananas is Banana Bread, a recipe which I had posted long back. Both are equally good and very easy to prepare. This recipe is adapted from Martha Stewart.

Banana and Chocolate Chip Muffins

This is a classic banana chocolate chip muffin recipe which is ready in less than an hour. A very easy and no-fuss recipe where all the ingredients get mixed in a single bowl if you wish and requires no cake beater or kitchen machine to prepare the batter.

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 25 - 30 minutes
Total time: 45 - 50 minutes
1 cup = 250 ml capacity
Makes 6 large Muffins (10 small size muffins)


1 3/4 cups of plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 large ripe bananas (about 1 1/2 cups)
3/4 cup of sugar
80 ml of melted butter (1/3 rd of a cup)
1 tsp vanilla essence
1/4 cup milk (at room temperature)
1 large egg
1/2 cup chocolate chips


1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F). Arrange muffin cases in a muffin tray. Small size cups will yield 10 muffins and large size cups or cases will yield 6 muffins.
2. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl - plain flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon powder, and salt.
3. In a large bowl, mash 3 ripe bananas which should be around 1 and a half cups or slightly more. To this add melted butter and sugar. Mix for 2 minutes till all the sugar is dissolved.
4. Then add rest of the ingredients - egg, milk, and vanilla essence and mix well.
5. Now add the dry ingredients to the mashed bananas mixture and mix well.
6. Finally, add chocolate chips which can be anywhere between 1/2 cup and 1 cup. (I have added 1/2 cup)
7. Pour the batter evenly and fill almost 3/4 portion of the muffin cases. Sprinkle some more chocolate chips on top of the batter.
8. Bake for 25 - 30 minutes. After 25 minutes, insert a clean knife in the center of a muffin which should come out clean. If not, bake for 5 - 7 minutes more.
9. Once baked, cool completely before serving.

Note: Bananas have to be over ripe and soft. Firm bananas will not give the same effect. All ingredients should be at room temperature.
