Ajwain Fish Tikka

Spicy Fish Tikka preparation marinated with a combination of yogurt and spices infused with a slight flavor of ajwain, grilled or shallow fried to perfection. It can be served as a starter or as a side dish with a main course meal.

Prep time: 1 hour (marination)
Cook time: 20 - 30 minutes
Total time: 1 hour and 30 minutes approx
1 cup = 250ml


  • 500 grams boneless fish pieces (Kingfish/ Hammour)
  • 2 tablespoon yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon ginger & garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon besan (roasted chana dal powder)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon chopped green chili
  • 1 tablespoon chopped curry leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chat masala powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ajwain (bishop's weed/carom seeds)
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable oil

Cooking Directions

  1. Take fish pieces in a bowl and sprinkle 1 tablespoon salt and pinch of turmeric. Mix well and set aside for 15 minutes. Then wash the fish thoroughly under running water. Drain all the water and dab with a kitchen towel to remove the excess water.
  2. In a large glass bowl, add rest of the ingredients except for oil and mix well.
  3. Add fish pieces and marinate for 1 hour.
  4. You can either grill the fish pieces in oven at 250 degrees C for 20 minutes or shallow fry on a frying pan (5 minutes on each side)
  5. Serve hot with grilled vegetables.
