Aloo Chana Chaat (Chick pea and Potato Snack)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups boiled and cubed potatoes
  • 2 cups boiled chickpea
  • 1 packet papdi
  • 1 packet chaat vermicelli or any bhujiya
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 big tomato chopped
  • 2 green chilies
  • ½ cup chopped coriander
  • 2 cups sweetened and whisked yogurt
  • ½ cup tamarind chutney*
  • ½ cup green mint chutney*
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp chaat masala powder

For green chutney: grind together

  • 1 tsp grated garlic
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt
  • 1 cup mint leaves
  • 1 cup green coriander
  • 1 slice of bread soaked in water

For sweet chutney:

  • ½ cup tamarind pulp
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 4 tbsp grated jaggery
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp black salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder

Instructions

Spicy Chick Pea Masala:

  • In a bowl combine together boiled chickpeas, onion, tomatoes, lemon juice, green chilies, cumin powder, red chili powder, salt and chaat masala powder. Mix well and set aside.

For sweet chutney:

  • Take a lemon-sized piece of dry tamarind. Soak it in 1cup boiling water for 15 minutes.
  • Squeeze out all the softened pulp into the water and bring the pulp to a boil. While it starts to boil, add 4 tbsp crushed jaggery, 1 tsp roasted cumin powder, 1 tsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp black salt, and 1/2 black pepper powder. Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for 5 minutes. Add water if needed.

To assemble the chat

  • Take a single serving plate and start assembling the chaat. 1st layer- of 5 crushed papdi, 2nd layer- a handful of boiled potatoes, 3rd layer- 3 spoons of chickpea masala, 4th layer- 3 tbsp of sweetened yogurt, 5th layer- drizzle 1 tbsp tamarind chutney, 6th layer- drizzle 1 tbsp mint chutney, 7th layer- chopped coriander. Finally, cover everything with chaat vermicelli.
