Preheat oven to 180 deg c. and grease a round 20-centimetre pie dish with butter.
Peel the apples, cut into wedges and add in 1 and 1/2 cups of water, cook until soft (10 minutes).
Remove cooked apple wedges from the syrup and reserve the syrup for the batter.
Heat 1/2 cup butter, sugar, reserved apple syrup (1 cup). Once the sugar is dissolved set aside to cool. Beat in the egg. Combine the plain flour and baking powder and add to the butter mixture. Mix to form a slack cake batter.
Arrange the cooked apple wedges in the pie dish slightly overlapping each other and pour the prepared batter evenly on top.
Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until golden brown and baked through.
To make the syrup, melt 1/3 cup butter with honey and pour over the hot pie as soon as it is taken out from the oven.
Serve warm with fresh cream or vanilla ice cream.
