Lentil Soup

A homestyle warm and comforting soup where cooked and pureed lentils are seasoned with garlic and spices. Ideal to be served during winters.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup green gram daal washed & soaked
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1 to mato chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic sliced
  • 1 tbsp ginger chopped
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 vegetable stock cube optional
  • 5 cups of water
  • 1 small piece cinnamon stick
  • ½ cup chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

For tempering:

  • 1 tbsp finely chopped garlic
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp garam masala powder

Instructions

  • Discard the cinnamon stick and puree the lentil mixture with a hand blender and set aside.
  • Heat butter in a saucepan and fry garlic till it turns light brown in color and then add lentil puree to it.
  • Add lemon juice and garam masala powder. Stir well and check the salt. Adjust accordingly if you need to add more lemon juice, salt etc. Bring to a boil and cook on slow flame for 5 minutes.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Notes

Note: If the soup becomes too watery then cook it on slow flame till it becomes thick. And if it becomes too thick then add more water and more spices accordingly.
