Aam Panna ~ Mango Drink

Sweet and spicy refreshing drink made with cooked raw mango along with Indian spices.

In India, mango is considered the king of fruits and the national fruit of the country. Being a tropical fruit it can be relished in a certain season. Thus making it tropical, seasonal and the most delicious and refreshing of all the fruits which actually justifies why it is deemed as the ‘king of the fruits’.

Aam Panna

We all hear about mango smoothies and drinks but there is a special refreshing treat made with raw mangoes called ‘Aam Panna’. To break the monotony of making pickles out of raw mangoes all the time, you can try an instant mango drink, where raw mango is first boiled or steamed. The cooked pulp is then seasoned with Indian spices, diluted with either water or soda, and served chilled. Here I have used jaggery as the sweetener which can be substituted with sugar or honey. To balance the sourness of the raw fruit, we use black salt. You can also add a dash of black pepper powder or a pinch of chili powder if you wish.

What is black salt?

It is a type of rock salt, mostly used in South Asian countries. It is black when it is in its raw state which resembles black rock pieces and gets a pinkish color when ground to a fine powder. It has a slightly odd smell due to the sulfur content.
In Ayurveda, Black salt or Kala Namak is considered to be a cooling spice and is used as a laxative and digestive aid. It also helps with relieving flatulence and heartburn.
