The Custard Story

Here is a small write-up that I wrote on my Instagram post when I casually published a post on this dessert. I really hope you like it and do not forget to follow my Instagram page for all the latest posts and recipes.

This story is about a humble dessert called ‘Custard’…a home for all the abandoned fruits lying in the fruit basket waiting to be picked by someone.

The fruit basket gets pushed to the extreme corner of the table, to make space for the large pizza boxes. The apple in the basket is not as crisp and shiny as it should be. Bananas are shunned for their brown speckles and there is a lone orange unnoticed along with a sour kiwi.

All of a sudden, these fruits get picked up together by the home chef…all wondering if the transit is a mixer jar to get revamped into a smoothie. The chef then walks past the blender only to place these forsaken goodies on a chopping board.

Voila! The fruits rejoice as they are now being presented in their real form but with a makeover. They are elegantly peeled and chopped, and get dressed in a creamy silky gleaming sauce called ‘the custard’.

The fruits are now loved by almost anyone…even by those who just pushed the fruit basket to the corner of the table.

The mighty ‘custard’ embraced all the fruits by giving them a new life and purpose…and those who enjoyed the custard lived happily ever after😀

Equipment

  • Saucepan

Ingredients

For instant custard sauce

  • 3 tablespoon instant custard powder
  • 3 ¼ cup milk
  • ¾ cup sugar white granulated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

For toppings

  • ½ apple diced
  • ½ banana
  • ½ cup grapes cut into half
  • ¼ cup pomegranate arils
  • ¼ cup chopped almonds
  • 5 dates chopped
  • 2 dry figs sliced

Instructions

Preparation

  • Take 1/4 cup of milk and mix 3 tablespoon custard powder and set aside
  • Chop all the fruits except bananas. Sprinkle a few drops of lemon juice over the fruits to prevent them turn brown. Cover and set aside in a refrigerator.
  • Chop all the nuts and dry fruits and set aside.

To prepare custard sauce

  • Heat 3 cups of milk on a slow flame, and keep stirring.
  • When it starts to simmer and lightly boil, add the milk-custard mixture along with sugar, and vanilla essence.
  • Keep stirring and cook the sauce on slow flame for about 10 minutes. Once the sauce thickens slightly, turn off the flame and set it aside for it to cool down.
  • Pour the sauce into a glass container and refrigerate for 1 hour.

To make fruits and nuts custard

  • Add the chopped fruits and chopped banana to the chilled custard sauce and mix well. Just add fruits as required according to the sauce. Do not add all fruits at once.
  • Pour the dessert into the serving bowls and top it with chopped nuts and pomegranate arils or berries of your choice.

Notes

1 cup capacity = 250 ml
Adjust the consistency of the custard sauce by adding a little more milk to make it flowy or by cooking for a longer time to make it thicker.
