Moong Dahi Chat ~ Green Gram & Yogurt Chat

Moong Dahi Chat is a wholesome and nutrition-packed chat recipe with crunchiness from onion, tomatoes, and pomegranate and a hint of tanginess from mint chutney and tamarind chutney.

Chat is a popular Indian street food that comes in many forms and variations and is served in layers. Chat is also known as Indian Fast Food, where all the major preparations like puris and chutneys are kept ready along with chopped vegetables. All we have to do is to assemble in layers according to one’s taste and preference.

Sweet Tamarind Chutney

  • 5 tbsp of tamarind pulp (seedless) or [lime size tamarind ball soaked in 1 cup hot water]
  • 3 tbsp of dates paste or 1/2 cup grated jaggery
  • 2 cups water
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • Pinch of black salt (or ordinary salt)
  • ½ black pepper powder
  • 3 tbsp of cooking oil
Cook all ingredients together in a saucepan for 15 to 20 minutes on slow flame.

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup green gram moong
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped tomato
  • 1 potato boiled & cubed
  • 2 teaspoon ginger & garlic paste combines
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup or more yogurt
  • 1 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 teaspoon chat masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup tamarind chutney
  • 1 cup green chili chutney
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • ½ cup finely chopped tomatoes
  • 1 cup fine sev
  • 1 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 5 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 10 pieces papdi or as needed

Instructions
 

  • Soak 1/2 cup moong (green gram) overnight or minimum for 4 to 5 hours. Cook with salt for 20 to 30 minutes in water. Drain the water and set it aside. You can use the moong water for any other dish.
  • Heat Cooking oil in a saucepan and add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds. When they start to splutter, add chopped onion and saute till soft.
  • Add 2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste and green chilies.
  • Now add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon red chili powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder.
  • Fry the masala for some time on low heat and then add chopped tomatoes.
  • Cook for 2 minutes and add cooked moong, lemon juice, coriander leaves, and salt.
  • Stir well and cook for 1 more minute till everything is well combined. Turn off the gas and let the moong masala cool for some time.
  • In a bowl add yogurt, sugar, and chat masala. Mix well by adding some water to get a nice flowy texture.
  • In a serving bowl or a large tray, make the first layer with cooked moong masala. Then add some boiled potato cubes, broken papdi (optional), sprinkle some chopped onion, and chopped tomato. Top with yogurt mixture, mint chutney, tamarind chutney, sev, pomegranate seeds, and coriander leaves.
