Swedish meatballs

Most of us generally have tried Swedish meatballs at Ikea. And if you are fond of this dish, then I promise that these Swedish meatballs are far better than what you had in your Ikea restaurants. And the best accompaniment is the soft and fluffy mashed potatoes.

We all know that any dish for that matter, homemade is always better. This is what I realized, that apart from being more budget-friendly, it also ranks high on taste and hygiene as compared to restaurant food.

What Are Swedish Meatballs and Mashed Potatoes?

The actual traditional Swedish meatballs are made with a blend of two different kinds of meat in 50 – 50 proportion. But here I have used only mutton mince.

The size of a Swedish Meatball is smaller as compared to an Italian Meatball. Serving meatballs with sauce and mashed potato is not the traditional way of serving in Sweden. However, these juicy warm meatballs are served on their own along with lingonberry jam.

How To Make Swedish Meatballs with Mashed Potatoes?

I make Swedish Meatball dish in three steps:

Step 1: For soft meatballs, we add a mixture of breadcrumbs soaked in milk. Add all the meatball ingredients like egg, spice mix, salt, black pepper powder, and chopped onion & garlic.

If you wish you can add onion & garlic powder too instead of the chopped ones. Use your hands to mix the entire meatball mixture to get a smooth dough-like consistency. Using a chopper to mix all together also gives good results.

Just to make it easy to handle the meat mixture and shape it well, it is better to refrigerate for a few minutes.

It is always recommended to make small size meatballs, the size of a small lime. Cook with butter in a saucepan by placing a lid so that all the moisture is retained.

Step 2: Usually the sauce is prepared in the saucepan in which the meatballs were cooked, as there is already butter in it with all the meat flavors. The sauce we make is a typical white sauce, but instead of milk, the stock is used for the volume. The sauce is then enriched with cream, soy sauce, and black pepper.

Step 3: Preparing mashed potato is the easiest of all. All you need to do is mash freshly boiled hot potatoes with butter and spices of your choice. If you want, you can skip the spices and season with salt, pepper, and cheese.

These are the three main steps to be followed in making this traditional style of Swedish Meatballs.

  • 3 large potatoes
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

For meatballs

  • In a large bowl, add ½ cup bread crumbs and 60 ml of milk. Mix well and set aside for 15 minutes until the crumbs are well soaked. To this add, mutton mince, 1 egg, chopped onion, chopped garlic, nutmeg spice mix, salt, and black pepper powder. Mix well and refrigerate for a few minutes. This will help in shaping the meatballs easily. With help of a teaspoon, take a small portion of mince mixture and shape it into a small lime size meatball.
500 grams mutton/beef mince, ½ cup bread crumbs, 60 ml milk, 1 egg, ½ cup chopped onion, 1 tablespoon chopped garlic, 1 tablespoon nutmeg, ¾ teaspoon Salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • Heat 2 tablespoon butter in a saucepan and fry the meatballs on all sides for a couple of minutes on medium high flame.
    2 tablespoon butter
  • Now reduce the flame, cover and cook the meat balls until fully done. This will take around 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Remove the meatballs and keep warm.

For the sauce

  • In the same saucepan with butter, add 3 tablespoon all-purpose flour. On low heat, roast the flour for 2 to 3 minutes. Now add 2 cups of stock of mutton, chicken or vegetable. Stir well to ensure there are no lumps. Once the sauce thickens, add cream, soy sauce, blackpepper powder, and salt if needed. Stir well until you get a smooth light brownish color sauce.
2 tablespoon butter, 3 tablespoon all-purpose flour, 2 cup stock, ½ cup cooking cream, 2 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon black pepper powder, ¾ teaspoon Salt

For the mashed potatoes

  • Boil 3 large potatoes in water along with 1 tablespoon salt. When the potatoes are cooked well, remove in a large bowl and discard the water. Mash the potatoes along with butter, milk, salt, pepper, dried oregano, smoked paprika (optional), and garlic powder. Mix well until you get a smooth and creamy mixture.
¾ teaspoon Salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper powder, 3 large potatoes, ¼ cup milk, 2 tablespoon butter
  • For plating: Spread a couple of tablespoons of mashed potatoes, place the meat balls on top and drizzle with the sauce. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
